Cisco Systems Inc. Joins Emerge Alliance Governing Board

3 May 2023 – The EMerge Alliance Governing Board announced that Cisco Systems Inc., a long-time Participating member of EMerge Alliance, had successfully petitioned and been confirmed as the newest Board member.
“Cisco’s increasing involvement in the electrical side of today’s rapidly advancing wave of power system digitalization makes them a natural to help lead the rapid adoption of safe, resilient, economical, and sustainable DC and hybrid AC/DC distributed energy microgrid power systems for buildings, enterprises, neighborhoods, and communities,” commented EMerge Alliance Chairman and Co-founder, Brian Patterson. Their early work in natively dc-based power over ethernet (PoE) and most recent game-changing work in digital fault-managed DC power (FMP) are essentials in today’s growing shift to dc coupled and digitally managed microgrids with the alternative to deliver ac or dc electricity to new applications like EV charging, electric heat pumps, and advanced 5G communications systems.
IEEE Senior Member and Engineering Fellow at Cisco Systems, Joel Goergen, will head a team of Cisco subject matter experts to help create EMerge Alliance vanguard standards and promote market development of these and other new technologies. “I have been impressed by EMerge Alliance’s laser focus on the greater use of direct current-based technology to facilitate the transformation of electric power infrastructure to be more clean, safe, sustainable, efficient, and resilient, and we at Cisco are proud to have been a part of that work,” said Goergen. He pointed out, “While technologies like FMP rapidly evolve and are embraced by the market, we need to balance safety with optimum performance, which will be the focus of our participation with those members who share a common vision, purpose, and mission.”
