Microgrid Use Cases at the Enterprise Level – Commercial/Industrial, Residential, EV Infrastructure, ICT

Monday, September 9, 2024 | 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM PT

This workshop will review recent use cases of actual nano grid/microgrid architectures implemented in various market applications, i.e., Commercial/Industrial, Residential, EV Infrastructure, Military, and ICT. A combination of design, construction, features, economics, challenges, and results will be presented and up for discussion of each system. The focus will be on the performance of the resulting installs, including their contribution to reducing carbon footprint and improving reliability and resiliency.

Specific use cases discussed will include:
• DC-Coupled Design-Build
• Bi-directional power flow
• LVDC Power Distributions
• Fault Managed Power
• Interconnected microgrids

During the last hour of the workshop, participants will take a special VIP pre-show tour of the live Microgrid and Grid-of-Grids demonstration on the tradeshow floor, where company representatives will give insight into the details of the microgrids, including how they were designed, what equipment and technologies are included, how interconnected microgrids work, and how they function under various operating and fault conditions. As participants will be viewing the microgrid demonstration in advance of the show floor’s official opening, all participants must wear closed-toe shoes, as required by show management. Participants will be escorted onto the floor to view the demonstration and will be required to leave immediately following.

Meeting the Challenge of Designing AC/DC Hybrid Microgrids

Monday, September 9, 2024 | 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM PT

The planning phase is the cornerstone of microgrid deployment, involving meticulous concept design and careful selection of equipment, ensuring safe and reliable operation at a reasonable cost. Traditionally, this phase is fraught with complexity, given the absence of standardized guidelines for equipment selection, particularly in DC microgrid protection, and consistent product information. Led by industry leaders, Current/OS rules and EMerge Alliance vanguard standards provide game-changing guidance in this rapidly evolving landscape, offering ways to harmonize specifications and to assess compatibility of equipment. In combination with DCIDE, an advanced Microgrid concept design platform, they can significantly slash the design and engineering transaction time and costs by streamlining the selection of components and verification of their compatibility.

This workshop will directly address the design of circuit protection of the microgrid and the selection of the protection devices according to Current/OS rules, including both the case of conventional protection with fuses or electromechanical circuit breakers, and the use of new solid-state circuit breakers, for which standards are under development.

Specific technical topics discussed will include:

  • Basic Current/OS-EMerge Hybrid AC/DC Microgrid Architectures.
  • Using DCIDE to reduce the time and cost of creating a feasible microgrid concept design.
  • Incorporating Current/OS & EMerge rules, guidelines and standards.
  • Selecting and ensuring multi-vendor equipment compatibility.
  • Managing faults in Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids and different protection approaches.
  • Selecting circuit protection equipment and strategies.

The workshop will involve presenting the basic principles of the most recent Current/OS – EMerge harmonized guidelines and vanguard standards, creating a practical design of an actual microgrid that addresses these principles, using one of the industry’s most advanced design tools during the workshop. Creating a feasible microgrid design in a single afternoon? – Come see how it’s done, with you being a part of the design team!

The last hour of the workshop, participants will take a special VIP pre-show tour of the live Microgrid and Grid-of-Grids demonstration on the tradeshow floor, where company representatives will give insight into the details of the microgrids, including how they were designed, what equipment and technologies is included, how interconnected microgrids work, and how they function under various operating and fault conditions.
